  • Kid’s Baking

I have been working on teaching my daughters skills in the kitchen. We have been baking bread together for years. I decided to let them take the reins this time. They each made their own loaf of bread using the recipe from The Prairie Homestead. I love this recipe because it is so simple and doesn’t require any fancy equipment– not even a mixer!

I was so proud of them for doing it alone. I didn’t help them with a single thing. They even proofed the yeast by themselves. If 8 and 9 year old girls can bake a loaf of bread, so can you!! I believe in you!

  • Homeschool FAQs

I have been getting a lot of questions about homeschooling recently, and I thought I would answer them here.

What grades are you children in?
I have three daughters. They are in K4, 2nd grade, and 4th grade.

    What curriculum do you use?
We use Abeka Academy. We started using it in 2017 and did parent-led that year. I was very overwhelmed with a big move, losing a very close family member, and trying to keep up with life. So, the next year we did academy. It was a game-changer. I honestly wanted to quit homeschooling until we made the switch. With academy, you get DVDs or can stream the videos online. This makes the parent more of a facilitator. There is still a lot of work for the parent, but it is much more manageable.

What other curricula have you tried?
We started out with Horizon’s. The next year, I tried Heart of Dakota. The following year, we did LIFEPAC. They were fine, but not a good fit for our family. We also visited a Classical Conversations group in Oklahoma in 2017 and seriously considered that switch before finding Abeka.

    What about college?
There are MANY homeschool curriculums that are accredited. Your child will have records just like if they were going to public or private school, and be able to send them to any college that they apply to. (Abeka is one of them.)

    What about socialization?
Every homeschooling parent’s eyes just rolled. Did you hear it? Perhaps MANY years ago this may have been a concern. These days, there are so many groups that your child can be a part of. There are homeschooling groups that throw dances and parties. Also, don’t you remember your teachers telling you “We aren’t at school to socialize?” My children are comfortable speaking to people of all ages. There is the normal shyness, but overall they are very well adjusted and comfortable making friends. I’m not worried at all.

Are you part of a co-op?
No. We have moved MANY times over the past 4 years. I did just learn about a local co-op that I am looking into joining next year.

Do I have to know everything to teach my children?
No! You can learn along with your child. Obviously, you will want to go over the lessons in advance so that you can be able to help your child when they are doing something. Abeka has a support line that you can call if you need additional help. There are also facebook groups for each grade level that offer a ton of support and encouragement. It’s such a misconception when parents think they aren’t smart enough to teach their children. You can do it!

How long is your school day?
We typically start our day around 8 AM and are done by 3. My children take 10 minute breaks after completing two subjects. This has helped them stay focused so much better. There is also an hour break for lunch and “recess” to help them reset and be ready to finish strong.

    Were you homeschooled?
I was not. I went to public school until I graduated. I loved those years, and didn’t have a bad experience with it at all.

    Why do you homeschool?
Originally, I started because we lived in one of the most unsafe places in the country. I wanted to know that my babies were safe. I did a lot of praying and ultimately feel that God has called us to this. I love that I got to be the one to see my daughters read their first word. I’ve been involved every step of the way. I also believe that schools are trying to force kids into a box. If they don’t learn this one specific way, it’s just too bad for them. I get to help them where needed. I can adjust and teach something a different way if they are struggling to understand. Each year, I stop and pray about whether we are going to continue. Each year, it has been a yes.

    Is your family supportive?
Not always. Especially not at first, but I think that is because they didn’t understand it. None of us had experience with homeschooling, so no one knew what it was going to look like. We still have family that doesn’t get it, and like to give quizzes over holiday meals. That is really frustrating. I feel a lot more supported now than I did when we first began, and I’m really grateful for that. It’s hard to be on an island.

    Where do you homeschool?
Currently, we have a room with an old kitchen table set up. The bigger girls share this table. The youngest has a desk that sits next to my desk in the office. We have homeschooled around the kitchen table in the past, and it all works great. You can see a tour of an old setup here.

    How can you save money?
Many parents buy used textbooks– which can be purchased in various facebook groups or on ebay. Once you have one child in that grade, it’s easy to save those textbooks for the next child. Dollar Tree has a lot of great flashcards and workbooks. I’m always looking at the clearance racks of stores for school supplies that we will need.

Do you have to register with the state to homeschool?
It depends on your state. Some states require that you send a letter with intent to homeschool. The parents have to send in reports at the end of each school year. Some states require you to send your intent to homeschool, and thats all. Other states are completely hands off, and even registering as a homeschooling family is optional. Make sure you check the laws of your particular state. You are considered a private school when homeschooling, and you want to be sure to have everything done properly.

If there are any questions that I didn’t answer, please let me know! I have loved our homeschooling journey. Yes, there are days that I just want to quit because it would be easier to send them to school. But, the benefits far outweigh any of the passing frustrations! I certainly don’t consider myself an expert, but I have been homeschooling since 2014 and have some experience under my belt.

  • Kid Smart

Let’s talk Fish Oil! By now, everyone has probably heard of it– but how much do you know? We’ve all heard that it is good for our hearts and brains, but why? This article is really great about the benefits of adding fish oil to your diet and the science behind it.

Bioglan Kids Smart Omega-3 fish oil has made its way into our vitamin lineup. Our kids take daily multivitamins, probiotics, and elderberry. Now, they get a fun fish added in– and they honestly look forward to it.

At first, I thought there was no way I was going to convince them to take fish oil. I always pictured it tasting fishy and gross, to be completely honest. But, I know the importance of taking fish oil– especially in a family with a huge history of heart disease. I tried Kid Smart burstlets before offering them to my kids, and I was so surprised! It is fruity and delicious with NO fishy taste whatsoever! It didn’t take any convincing for them to love it. You can snip or twist the tail off and squeeze it into your mouth, or eat it as is.

Fish oil provides two essential omega-3 fatty acids: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). As both are essential fatty acids our bodies cannot produce, it is important that we get them from either the food we eat or supplements. If you don’t like fish, a fish oil supplement is the perfect solution!

So, why chose Kids Smart fish oil over other brands on the market? Well, Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets provide up to 10x more fish oil than other kids’ supplements. There are 500 mg of fish oil, 133 mg of DHA, and 28 mg of EPA in each burstlet! That’s a LOT of brain boosting power! They are free of gluten, yeast, wheat, and dairy– a huge bonus for this food allergy mama! Not only are they really good for my children, they have been fun for them to take!

We start our day with breakfast and our vitamins and supplements. For those who don’t know, I am a homeschooling parent. I have been able to get a front row seat to the difference in my children’s learning with an Omega-3 supplement added in. We are up against dyslexia and ADHD in our home. I’ve seen a positive change in my child’s focus and grades– and that is just my experience. I’m not a doctor. If you have concerns, please be sure to talk to your doctor or naturopath.

You can connect with Kids Smart on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Realhealth.com to keep up with new information and brand announcements!

Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets can be purchased on Amazon. Save 20% when you purchase a 30-count bottle of Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets on momsmeet.link/kidssmartamzn Amazon with the promo code 20MM20KS. This offer ends March 14, 2020.

  • Creating Home

Some of you many not know that I was an interior design major at one point in college. I changed my major because I knew that we would be moving wherever God called us in ministry– and a career in interior design wouldn’t be sustainable in my mind. Honestly, my biggest regret is switching majors and not sticking with something that I loved. I see so many people who have successful design businesses that work from home.

I grew up watching Trading Spaces with my mom. HGTV was my favorite channel to watch. It still would be my favorite if we had cable. I LOVE Joanna Gaines and what she is doing. Even though House Hunters was absurd, I still loved to see the inside of those homes. All of that to say, I still really love interior design.

If you are reading our book club book for January, then you know she is talking all about home– the atmosphere that is created by us. I don’t want to go into the book now. I’m saving that for the end of the month. But, it has just reaffirmed how much and why I love home design.

I have said for years that I am responsible for creating “home” for my children. We have moved a lot, and lived in many dwellings (8) in our eleven years of marriage. We take the “home” atmosphere with us wherever we go. I create it with cozy pillows and throws, candles, conversation, music, books, art, etc.

It doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant. It just has to be you. It has to be your family. It doesn’t need to be cookie cutter or fit into the most popular box. If fills you and your family with joy– embrace your style.

For my family, on our small budget, everything needs to serve a purpose. In the kitchen, I love having our wooden cutting boards on display. They get used every day, and are easily accessible. The many throws in our home come to good use since the house is a bit drafty. We have family photos on display and thrift store artwork that we love. I am not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination, but I do love simplicity and tidiness.

Home is where our families will learn the most about Jesus. Inside of these walls should be a safe haven for our family when the world gets too hard. Prayer and scripture should fill our home. When someone walks through our front door, I want them to feel that love resides here. That is why I love design and am passionate about creating a cozy and inviting home. I want home to be the place my daughters long for when life gets hard. I want them to know that they are safe and unconditionally loved here.

  • Giving

If you don’t already know, we love baking bread. I want to send you back to this recipe, which is our favorite sweet bread. The recipe makes two loaves, which makes it perfect for gifting.

I made this bread once and took a loaf to one of my coworkers– I just removed the chocolate chips from the recipe. Her mom is really limited on what she can eat, and a nursing home is not taking care of her the way they are supposed to. When I gave it to her, it was as though I gave her a bar of solid gold.

I don’t tell you this to toot my own horn AT ALL. I tell you this because we often want to do something for others, but feel the financial strain. Especially at this time of year. Baking a simple loaf of bread is such a gift to people. If you aren’t great with bread, bake some cookies. If you are making a meal for your family, make an extra helping for your neighbor.

I feel as though we overcomplicate giving. We feel that if we aren’t able to give in a big and extravagant way, we shouldn’t give at all. That is FALSE. Usually, the small gifts mean the most to people. Your tiny drop in the bucket and yours and yours and yours combined with mine eventually overflow. A little kindness goes a long way.

This has been a wonderful lesson for my daughters. They love to help me bake (and eat) this bread, but they always know that a loaf is going to go to someone else. They usually want to give it to the same person, and she is just as thankful as the first time. It has been such a simple and fun way to teach them generosity– while also teaching them the skill of baking bread. Win-win!

They are also learning the skill of braiding. 😉 So cute.

What small gift can you give to help spread the kindness? Who can you hold a door open for? Can you tell a mother or father that they are doing a great job? Just look around and you will see a need that you can easily meet.

  • Big Girl Bed

It was time. Harper has been in a toddler bed for the past two years. While she would have fit for at least two more, we needed to get her a new bed. This bed went on sale on Wayfair and I snatched it up. It was easy to put together and is very sturdy. It has the option to built it lower to the ground– which means you can skip the toddler bed!

The mattress that she had was around 20 years old. Yes, TWENTY. A sweet friend gave it to me before Addison was born. We needed another crib mattress but couldn’t afford to buy a new one. It was sturdy and held up SO WELL. It has been falling apart for a few months

We had some time at Target with her and we looked at the bedding. She decided that she wants this bedding. I’m hoping it will go on sale soon. (I just noticed that it went on sale.)

If you want “Pinterest worthy” bedrooms, you are on the wrong blog. If you want real and attainable for the average person bedrooms, this is your space.

  • Acid or Grace?

Does this one hurt you as much as it does me?

I am filled TO. THE. BRIM. I’m overwhelmed. Overscheduled. Overtired. I have three kids who bump into me all day long. What is pouring out?

I remember Lysa Terkeurst talking about what happens when people bump into your happy. Like, you are walking along and everything is really great. Then, something happens that messes it up. It could be big or small. What is going to come out of you?

I know people who spew acid on EVERYONE around them when something happens. It doesn’t matter how big or small. And, don’t you dare try to share your heart with them because things will always be worse in their life than yours. You can smell how toxic they are– even if they aren’t currently angry and unhappy. These people are exhausting, and quite honestly I try to avoid them. A toxic attitude is so contagious.

I want to be full of grace. When it comes to my family, I want grace to spill over. I want them to know that it’s ok to make mistakes. I want them to know that I will always love them and they can come to me with anything. But, if I have acid pouring over, they are going to be afraid of mistakes. They won’t come to me when someone has hurt them. They will hide things from me.

“…for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34

What is your heart full of?

This is convicting. My temper is something that I have worked really hard on controlling. I have been much better about pouring grace over my children and my husband– because I remind myself often of the grace that God has shown to me. I am so undeserving of His grace and kindness. Yet, He continually shows it to me. Over and over again he loves me in spite of me. The best way we can share Christ with others is to fill ourselves with His love and His word.

So, ask yourself this question. “What do people feel: acid or grace?”
