• Valentine’s Weekend

We had a pretty mellow Valentine’s Day. I did silly thinks like dye milk pink for breakfast. I shaped the girls’ macaroni and cheese into hearts on their plates. They were so sweet and made every person in the family hand-made cards. Something that they did all on their own– no help or encouragement to do so! I’m so proud of the way they love each other.

This year, we didn’t get the kids any candy. None at all. They are always given so much by grandparents and their teachers at church that we are drowning in it. I try to avoid feeding them sugar because I know how harmful it is. We do have treats, but they are just that– a treat. I want to encourage you to read this and see why it’s important for me– especially during this season of illness. Food is medicine (or poison). Moving on.

The girls had a slumber party with Scott’s mom on Friday night. That allowed us to go out for Valentine’s Day for the first time in… I don’t even know. A long time. We ate dinner at a local Italian restaurant, and then we hit up our friend’s board game cafe and played games for a few hours. (I also spilled a massive coffee all over myself and every nearby surface. Winning.) Will you do me a favor and “like” his FB page if you are on there? He’s seriously such an awesome guy and I love what he is doing for the community.. He also made me a new drink without being asked and didn’t charge me for it. GO if you are close by!

On Saturday, we went to another local book store and I drooled over their beautiful books. This was the first Saturday that Scott and I have both had off in several months! I think since we moved into this house… so we soaked up every minute.

We also went to TJ Maxx, where we found this farm-to-table play kitchen for an absurd clearance price. I was sure it was going to be broken inside or something. I couldn’t pass it up– and I usually am good at that. We built it before going to pick up the kids. We couldn’t wait for them to get home and see it!

It came with the pots, veggies, “wood” baskets, and cutting board! They have played with it every chance they get. I love that the colors blend in wonderfully with our home while still providing a ton of fun. We used to have this play kitchen and loved it also. It got used and abused by three toddlers and we sold it before moving to Oklahoma– knowing that it wouldn’t survive such a big move.

We had such a fun and relaxing weekend. I always hate when they end. I hope that you felt loved. Even if you don’t have a “special someone”, you have a father in heaven who loves you more than any human ever can.

Can you believe that February is over half-way gone?! Don’t forget to read The Magnola Story for our book club!

  • Blue Sky

I am so grateful for the reprieve of warm weather in the midst of a gross winter. We take advantage of the change each time. The sidewalk chalk comes out of storage. Bikes, scooters, and helmets are scattered about.

The kids’ favorite place to be is by these massive pine trees They kept trying to climb them with no luck. But, they sure had fun trying. The sunshine was glorious. I didn’t think we would ever see the sun again.

Of course, it has snowed and iced many times since then. But, two days of warmth certainly helped boost our moods to get through more yucky weather. We try to focus on the good instead of feeling grumpy about the weather. Grumpiness doesn’t change anything. In fact, it is just contagious and makes everyone else that you encounter grumpy.

Isn’t that the truth for life? Being grumpy and having a bad attitude doesn’t change a thing. Some days, it is hard to not be grumpy and have a bad day. I understand that. But, a positive attitude can be a game changer. Looking for the good in the midst of the hard is what gets me through the hard days.

The weather is cold and dreary again. Blue skies will return again. We will be okay. We will play in the cold and play in the sun. We are going to enjoy each day. They are ALL a gift.

Side note– Have you heard of the book No Such Thing as Bad Weather ? It’s one that I really want to read. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you have read it.

  • The Life Giving Home Discussion

I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around the beautiful words and ideas in this book. It was the perfect way to start off the new year– full of inspiration for how to make our homes special and full of love and Jesus for our families.

As I’ve said before, I’ve always loved “home design” and creating beautiful spaces. But, I always thought it was a bad thing to want my house to be pretty and cozy. I had never before thought of God DESIGNING the earth– not REALLY thought about it. To think about the beautiful garden that he created for Adam and Eve to live in. How could we ever look around at the beauty around us and not believe that God loves beauty. The trees are beautiful. The veins on a leaf are such a beautiful design. Look closely at a flower. It’s all beautiful, and it was all crafted by the hand of God!

I think that my favorite quote was: “When someone once asked me just what it was that my parents did that made me believe in God, without even thinking I said, ‘I think it was French toast on Sunday mornings and coffee and Celtic music and discussions and candlelight on the evenings . . .’ Because in those moments I tasted and saw the goodness of God in a way I couldn’t ignore.” – Sarah

Wow. If I can cultivate a home culture that makes it so my children can’t help but believe that God is real… it’s just incredible to think about. If my home can feel so inviting and people know that they are welcome here, then I’ve done something right.

“If you want your children to grow up loving what is true, beautiful, and good, your whole home should reflect that wholeness.” Sarah. I want my home to reflect the goodness of God. I want it to be a quiet place where we can meet God in prayer and study scripture. I want it to be the place where we feel less busy and overwhelmed. This should be the place where we can “think on these things”.

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Philippians 4:8

This book left me feeling so inspired and encouraged to stay the course with my children. Our home life is going to point them to Jesus or make them turn away. It’s not all about beautiful THINGS. Our attitudes, traditions, etc. should share the love of God.

Since the book is divided into two parts– the second being focused on each month of the year– I plan to re-read each month. Hopefully it will keep me inspired, and possibly give me some ideas if I feel “stuck”.

Now, it is your turn! If you read the book with us, or have read it in the past, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

What was your favorite quote or passage? Why?
How did this book make you feel?
Do you agree or disagree with the main focus of the book?
What aspects of this story can you relate to?

If you haven’t already read The Life Giving Home, I can’t recommend it enough! Also, don’t forget about February’s book The Magnolia Story!

  • February Book Club Announcement

    Hi, friends!

Tomorrow, I’m going to post the discussion for our January book club. Please remember to comment on the actual blog post (at the bottom of the page) instead of on facebook, etc. That way everyone can join in discussing.

I wanted to share the book we will be reading for February so that you have plenty of time to purchase or request it. I REALLY struggled with choosing a book. I thought about doing some sort of relationship book with Valentine’s Day coming up. But, ultimately decided to go in a different direction.

February tends to be when the motivation and inspiration of a new year start to wear off. I decided to choose another inspiring and motivating book to keep the momentum going!

The Magnolia Story is one of my favorite reads. I love Chip and Joanna Gaines, and have for many years. This book chronicles their lives and the story of how hard they worked to get where they are now.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that this book is all about design or home renovation. Their story gave me hope during a very dark time in our lives. Re-visiting it has reminded me of how God can take your mess and turn it into something beautiful.

I hope that you join us next month! You can request the book at your library, using one of the many reading/audiobook apps out there, or purchase it.

  • Kid Smart

Let’s talk Fish Oil! By now, everyone has probably heard of it– but how much do you know? We’ve all heard that it is good for our hearts and brains, but why? This article is really great about the benefits of adding fish oil to your diet and the science behind it.

Bioglan Kids Smart Omega-3 fish oil has made its way into our vitamin lineup. Our kids take daily multivitamins, probiotics, and elderberry. Now, they get a fun fish added in– and they honestly look forward to it.

At first, I thought there was no way I was going to convince them to take fish oil. I always pictured it tasting fishy and gross, to be completely honest. But, I know the importance of taking fish oil– especially in a family with a huge history of heart disease. I tried Kid Smart burstlets before offering them to my kids, and I was so surprised! It is fruity and delicious with NO fishy taste whatsoever! It didn’t take any convincing for them to love it. You can snip or twist the tail off and squeeze it into your mouth, or eat it as is.

Fish oil provides two essential omega-3 fatty acids: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). As both are essential fatty acids our bodies cannot produce, it is important that we get them from either the food we eat or supplements. If you don’t like fish, a fish oil supplement is the perfect solution!

So, why chose Kids Smart fish oil over other brands on the market? Well, Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets provide up to 10x more fish oil than other kids’ supplements. There are 500 mg of fish oil, 133 mg of DHA, and 28 mg of EPA in each burstlet! That’s a LOT of brain boosting power! They are free of gluten, yeast, wheat, and dairy– a huge bonus for this food allergy mama! Not only are they really good for my children, they have been fun for them to take!

We start our day with breakfast and our vitamins and supplements. For those who don’t know, I am a homeschooling parent. I have been able to get a front row seat to the difference in my children’s learning with an Omega-3 supplement added in. We are up against dyslexia and ADHD in our home. I’ve seen a positive change in my child’s focus and grades– and that is just my experience. I’m not a doctor. If you have concerns, please be sure to talk to your doctor or naturopath.

You can connect with Kids Smart on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Realhealth.com to keep up with new information and brand announcements!

Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets can be purchased on Amazon. Save 20% when you purchase a 30-count bottle of Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets on momsmeet.link/kidssmartamzn Amazon with the promo code 20MM20KS. This offer ends March 14, 2020.

  • Bookish Things

Yesterday was National Library Shelfie Day. Who knew that was a thing?! I took this picture to use for my Goodreads profile, and our personal library shelf is behind me in the office. So, I guess this is my shelfie? I did take one for work, but I’m not going to share it. My book was The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.

Since we had Monday off, we went to a place called The Old Book Barn. It is a whole barn full of books new and old! I want to go back and explore more without the kids– they got bored in our book sections. They each got to pick a book from their section, and it’s so affordable. It was a fun treat without costing much at all. I also learned that they offer trade-in for store credit! We immediately came home and gathered up books we won’t read again so that we can start the process of trading to buy more. HA!

I hope that you have been reading The Life Giving Home for our book club! It’s not too late! It is SO phenomenal and has inspired me so much. I’ve implemented some of the things I’ve read about and already seen a change in my home. The kids are signed up for an art class, which is really exciting. This is our first official homeschool group to join– which is WAY out of my comfort zone. But, I’ve done a great job and pushing myself out of my comfort zone so far this year.

I’ll be announcing the February book club book soon. I’ve been thinking about doing Uninvited by Lysa Terkeurst. Have any of you read it? I already know what we will do in March, and I’m very excited about it.

Target and Amazon both have their books and movies buy two get one free currently! I buy non-fiction books so that I can highlight and make notes as I read.

  • My 2020 Reading List

My to-read pile is ever-growing. Working in a library has made my usual to-read pile triple in size. I’m constantly seeing books that I want to read. I figured I would share what I am planning to read this year (so far) in case you need some ideas. Please also note that I haven’t read any of these, so I cannot speak to whether I recommend them or not.

    Non-Fiction:
The Life-Giving Home by Sally & Sarah Clarkson
    Uninvited by Lysa Terkeurst
When Less Becomes More by Emily Ley
The Girl For the Job by Jess Connolly
The Life Giving Parent by Clay & Sally Clarkson
    Capital Gaines by Chip Gaines
Simplicity Parenting by Kim John Payne
    Awakening Wonder by Sally Clarkson
How to Raise a Wild Child by Scott D. Sampson (read with discernment)
Bringing up Girls by James Dobson

    Fiction:
The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes
Meg & Jo by Virginia Kantra
Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly
Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelly
Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery
    The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
The Little Cafe in Copenhagen by Julie Caplin (the whole series looks cute!)
The Printed Letter Bookshop by Katherine Reay
The Heir Affair by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan (I loved The Royal We.)
The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

This is just my list to start the year off. My goal is to read 50 books this year. You can see what I’m currently reading and my “shelf” on Goodreads. I tend to pick up several of the newer novels or most popular checkouts at the library and read them also. When you get asked for book recommendations or opinions, it is nice to be able to give an answer.

  • Debt Free Journey

Debt isn’t a secret. We will never share exact numbers, etc. However, I’ve mentioned before that we want to get out from under the debt that weighs us down before we even start looking for a ministry position. That isn’t just something we came up with. That is something that God has lead us to do. I had someone say “well, your hubby isn’t looking very hard is he?” I had to bite my tongue to keep from yelling at this man. He doesn’t even know us (not even our names) and he has no idea what we have gone through.

A side note- STOP with judgemental attitudes. We haven’t given up on ministry. We see that God pulled us away from it for this season because we had things we needed to work out. Personally, relationally, spiritually..and yes, financially. So, if you are one of the people who thinks we have permanently quit ministry– YOU ARE SO WRONG! Unless God calls us away permanently, this is temporary.

    Moving on…

I’m certainly no expert. If I was an expert, I wouldn’t have debt. But, I want to share with you what we have done to get motivated and moving.

    1. Total up all of your debt. I know. I didn’t want to either. But, when you see the exact number, it will make you feel something. Count in your student loans, auto loan, credit card(s), hospital bills, etc. It takes a lot of courage to do this step. But, it’s worth it. Yes, you are going to lose sleep. You are going to be angry. You are going to be afraid. But, DO IT
    2. Make a plan. How are you going to tackle this number? For us, we are TRYING to follow Dave Ramsey’s principles. We want an emergency fund first. This is where we have struggled the most. Our van has been in the shop FOUR times since July. Three of those times, it had completely broken down and driving it in rough shape wasn’t an option. Last week was the most recent stint. It starts to feel hopeless. But, keep your nose down and keep sticking to your plan.
    3. Work hard. If you are offered extra hours, take them. I’m working more Saturday’s this month since they were available. While Scott was off over the holidays, I went in early. Yes, it stinks to not see my family much. But, the weight is too much and we have to do something. So, we are doing it. Scott has said yes to overtime offers. It’s not fun. But, neither is debt. It will be worth it.
    4. BUDGET. This is important. Set a budget for how much you can spend on groceries, gas, etc. It has to be realistic. There are conflicting opinions on the occasional treat. One person may say that it’s ok to get that $1 coke every once in a while so that you don’t get too discouraged and down. Another says no treats at all and keep hustling. I’m not sure which camp I stand in… I know I’d give my left arm for a cherry coke from Sonic right now.. but I haven’t given in. If you are going to have an occasional treat– budget for it. I love the Monthly Budget worksheet from The Budget Mom to keep track of things.
    5. Visual aides— I am a visual person. I’ve written things down and looked at the numbers. However, I recently found these debt free charts. It has been fun to color in as we make progress. If this is the kind of thing that helps encourage you, check out the many charts that she has! Some of them are even charts to track your savings toward a house or car. Every square or line that gets filled in feels like such victory!

Like I said, I’m not an expert. Not at all. But, we have had a plan. We have spent a lot of time talking through it all, and need to spend even more time praying about it. We have made progress that we are really proud of. But, we do have a ways to go!

If you are on this journey also, let me know (if you are comfortable doing so) and I’d love to pray for you and encourage you to keep going when you feel like giving up.

Here are some debt-free and budget resources to help you out.

    GoGirl Budget Planner
    Financial Peace Planner
    The Budget Mom
    The Total Money Makeover

If you have any good resources to share– please do and I’ll add them to the list!

  • Creating Home

Some of you many not know that I was an interior design major at one point in college. I changed my major because I knew that we would be moving wherever God called us in ministry– and a career in interior design wouldn’t be sustainable in my mind. Honestly, my biggest regret is switching majors and not sticking with something that I loved. I see so many people who have successful design businesses that work from home.

I grew up watching Trading Spaces with my mom. HGTV was my favorite channel to watch. It still would be my favorite if we had cable. I LOVE Joanna Gaines and what she is doing. Even though House Hunters was absurd, I still loved to see the inside of those homes. All of that to say, I still really love interior design.

If you are reading our book club book for January, then you know she is talking all about home– the atmosphere that is created by us. I don’t want to go into the book now. I’m saving that for the end of the month. But, it has just reaffirmed how much and why I love home design.

I have said for years that I am responsible for creating “home” for my children. We have moved a lot, and lived in many dwellings (8) in our eleven years of marriage. We take the “home” atmosphere with us wherever we go. I create it with cozy pillows and throws, candles, conversation, music, books, art, etc.

It doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant. It just has to be you. It has to be your family. It doesn’t need to be cookie cutter or fit into the most popular box. If fills you and your family with joy– embrace your style.

For my family, on our small budget, everything needs to serve a purpose. In the kitchen, I love having our wooden cutting boards on display. They get used every day, and are easily accessible. The many throws in our home come to good use since the house is a bit drafty. We have family photos on display and thrift store artwork that we love. I am not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination, but I do love simplicity and tidiness.

Home is where our families will learn the most about Jesus. Inside of these walls should be a safe haven for our family when the world gets too hard. Prayer and scripture should fill our home. When someone walks through our front door, I want them to feel that love resides here. That is why I love design and am passionate about creating a cozy and inviting home. I want home to be the place my daughters long for when life gets hard. I want them to know that they are safe and unconditionally loved here.
