• Promise

Tropical Storm Barry made it’s way up here yesterday. We got some rain that resulted in such a beautiful double rainbow. I drove out to the farmhouse after work, and it was the most beautiful sight. I’m reminded of God’s promises so often.

I am so excited for this to be my normal commute home. Walking through the house in the quiet last night was so nice. Standing in the kitchen dreaming of cooking with the girls.. meals shared around the table. It’s just so peaceful.

Tomorrow, my sweet Harper turns five. She is our rainbow baby… the healing brought after a painful loss. She is sunshine and joy. I had a really difficult pregnancy with her filled with so many tears and prayers begging God to keep her safe. Finally, the rainbow came calmly into our lives.

Rainbows are such a beautiful reminder of God’s love for us. Seeing one in the sky feels like such a gift. I have so much to be thankful for, and I am so thankful for God’s beautiful reminder last night.

  • Kids in the Kitchen- Part II

Monday was Addi’s turn in the kitchen. She picked to make bowtie noodles from scratch. The cookbook we used is from Usborne and called Start to Cook. It has tons of great information to help kids learn their way around the kitchen. I can’t recommend it enough!

I rolled the pasta dough out and she did the cutting and shaping of the noodles. It was SO cute. We had some teeny tiny bowties and some super huge bowties.

For the sauce, we adapted a Pesto cream sauce recipe from The Prairie Homestead Cookbook. I basically made the recipe (doubled) without pesto. It was delicious and really hit the spot.

I know I said it before, but it is SO fun to see the look of pride on the kids’ faces when they have finished a meal. It has also made them more willing to try things that they may not typically eat. Am I the only one with kids that don’t like sauce on their noodles?

This meal was a lot of work, but the best meals are. Addi has decided she wants it to be her meal for the foreseeable future so that she can get really good at kneading the dough.

Harper keeps insisting on cupcakes for her meal.. so I’m not sure what we’re gonna do with her. haha!

  • Kids in the Kitchen

All of my kids love helping in the kitchen. I love allowing them to help whenever possible. My mom used to have us plan and cook a meal each week when we were younger. She taught me a lot of skills, and I’m so grateful for that.

I figured that the big girls were old enough to start doing more than just measuring and pouring ingredients in the mixer. I asked if they’d like to plan a meal. I’m not home for dinner as often with my work schedule, so they will be switching weeks. This week, Chloe chose to do spaghetti. She also wanted garlic bread, strawberries, apples, and celery on the side.

My mom taught me to make sauce from scratch. I’m not sure why homemade spaghetti sauce is always so mind blowing to people, but it is. haha! I set the ingredients out for Chloe and told her what each of them was. Aside from carrying the heavy pot for noodles and measuring how much sugar went into the sauce, I was hands off. Chloe prepared all of it with a little guidance! She put the seasonings in (I don’t measure that..) and opened the cans of tomato sauce. I was really proud.

It was a lot of fun to have one-on-one time with her like this. She wanted to smell every spice. she’s always been really curious. Giving her opportunities to explore is always beneficial for her.

Next week, Addi chose to do bowtie noodles from scratch! We are going to make homemade Alfredo sauce to go with them. My mouth is already watering.

There are so many people who say that they don’t know how to cook. I don’t want my kids to grow up saying that. I want them to feel confident in the kitchen and enjoy cooking.

Also, I feel like I need to say that I would absolutely do this if I had boys as well. EVERYONE should know how to cook. I really want to encourage you to get your kids in the kitchen with you. I think you’ll be surprised at how much they love it.

  • Summer Fun

Our little town does so many free activities through the summer. There is a tiny park near our house that we frequently walk to. We are super lucky that they do a lot of events at this particular park. The girls and I walk there a lot, and will be hitting up all of the activities all summer until we move!

They do a theme each week. This week, it was “under the sea” and they made little aquariums out of food. I was so proud of Harper for not trying to eat the gummy fish. (She can’t have gummies thanks to a spacer in her mouth.)

Our library also does a TON of fun, free activities also. When we move, we’ll live closer to the library and be able to walk to and from those easier. Perhaps.. country roads and walking make me nervous.

Tons of reading is still happening in our house, too! Our real goals for the summer: spend as much time outside as we can, read, and HAVE FUN!

    How is your summer going?

  • Summer Reading

Our summer reading program started yesterday.

Last week, I found the perfect bookshelves on Facebook marketplace. We have two of these pretty blue shelves. It was perfect timing. The girls ran around the house to find where all of our books were stuffed. It was so fun to hear their delight as they found old favorites. We are big fans of reading.

Harper can’t read quite yet, but she LOVES to have books read to her. Addi volunteered to read out loud to her, and it was the sweetest thing. She is such an expressive reader.

This morning, before my feet hit the floor, Chloe came running in asking if she could set a timer to start reading. Um, yes please. A quiet start to the morning? Sign me up every day.

It has been SO funny to see parents talking about the increase in their grocery bill since their kids have been home for the summer. No change here. ha! Summer is wonderful and we are HERE. FOR. IT. Homeschooling is stinking hard and so much work, but also worth it.

I really want to focus on reading this summer. Since one of the girls was diagnosed with dyslexia, she has made HUGE strides this year. I don’t want to lose that momentum. They both have grown tremendously and love reading.

If you have a local library, I really encourage you to check and see if they have any kind of summer reading program. It’s extra incentive to get your kids reading this summer!

  • Adventure Planning

I grew up traveling and camping. One year, we were so fortunate and got to visit several of the US National Parks. It was amazing. Badlands, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon stand out the most to me. We saw Mount Rushmore. We visited Wisconsin Dells. We drove close enough to see Great Salk Lake in Utah. So many amazing sights were seen, and I long to experience them with my kids.

I checked out this book from the library so that we could see the closest park to us, and learn more about the others. Scott and I ended up loving it so much that we bought our own copy so we can mark it up and stamp it as we travel through the years.

We have had a tent for several years, but haven’t camped since 2012! Another book we got from the library is this one. We live in IL, but there are options for just about every state.

I recently read At Home in the World by Tsh Oxenreider. They packed up their family, including their young children, and traveled the globe for a year. The book was phenomenal. While it certainly didn’t make me want to travel the globe with my children at this age, it did make me realize that we are too limiting. I grew up camping. I grew up camping in a tent. I don’t have emotional scars. I have incredible memories.

Some of the memories are amusing– camping next to incredibly intoxicated men who belched ALL. NIGHT. LONG. I believe those same people came close to running over our tent with us in it, which was scary. My younger sister and I would get bored (of course) and went and played Pooh Sticks on a bridge over water. We swam in cold streams. We walked and fed ducks. We played games, roasted marshmallows, and ate delicious food. We were always worn out from playing all day, and would sleep well if the neighbors weren’t loud.

Why are we so hesitant to do these things with children? Is it because the world seems more scary? Perhaps. Often, I think we just don’t want to deal with the “hassle” of it all. It’s a lot of work to pack what you need for a camping trip. Planning for meals and sleeping on the ground is a little stressful. But, the memories made are so incredible.

Summer vacation is coming, and I want to encourage you to plan some adventures. They don’t have to be huge– like trips to a National Park. Just camping in your backyard. Exploring your town on foot. Playing in a sprinkler. Whatever it is, get messy and make memories.

If you do have plans to visit national parks, and have a 4th grader, sign up at Every Kid in a Park. Your fourth grader, even homeschooled, can get your family free entrance into national parks for a whole year! Chloe is going into fourth grade next year, and I can’t wait to get our pass! You can also get a pass if you are the educator of a fourth grade class!

  • Celebrating Earth Day

I know that it is not super common for a Christian to also care about the planet. In my opinion, that is a shame. God created everything. He put us in charge of it to care for it. Why wouldn’t Christians care about the planet and do our part to take care of it? Anyway, I’ll get off my soap box.

We had our typical school day yesterday. Once Scott got home from work, I had to take off to get some lab work done. I was in a rotten mood, and the lab that made my appointment couldn’t actually do the blood tests. I stopped at Ace Hardware to look at paint colors, and of course the plants caught my eye. I have recently discovered Ranunculus, and have fallen in love with them. I brought this lady home with me.

I put her in a bigger pot right away, and hope she grows really big. We ate dinner on the back deck, and it was bliss. The weather was lovely and warm with a slight breeze. We decided that we were going to go for a short hike with the kids. We brought scavenger hunt check lists for the girls to do.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the trails were actually clean. I figured we could do some clean up and leave it better. I’m thrilled that we didn’t have to.

This is the girls’ favorite spot to find at this park. You can our picture from last year here; just swipe. While the girls took turns getting baths/showers, they painted their favorite part of the hike. It was fun to see what they each chose.

I don’t know about you, but getting in nature just calms my mind. There’s something peaceful and serene. Even with the kids squealing down the trails and allergies, it was so nice.

  • Easter Dresses for Girls of All Ages

I love being a girl mom, and it’s so fun when they can all match. I know eventually they will probably hate it. Right now, they still love it and I’m going to embrace it as long as I can. Easter is one month away, and it’s time to start thinking about Easter dresses.

  • Spinning Plates

I’ve been a little silent over here. The blog may be quiet, but life certainly isn’t. Life is feeling very stressful and overwhelming at the moment.

    Dentists appointments. $$$$
    Emergency Room visit $$$$$$$$
Eye doctor appointment and new glasses $$$
    Plumber visit $$
    Doctor removing stitches $

I feel like I’m spinning one hundred plates, but I’m not spinning them well. I think I’m at the point where they are about to all come crashing down on me.

Last week, I spent several hours in the ER with Chloe. She had to get some x-rays and five stitches. If you are picturing a cut that needed closed, don’t. It was awful, but that kid is a champ. She handled several numbing shots so bravely and read Betty Bunny books to me. We got home at 12:30 AM, and were both exhausted. She wasn’t allowed to write for the first couple of days, so she was giving me the answers and I would write them down for her. No school missed that way. She gets the stitches out on Friday if everything goes well.

On the farmhouse front- the news is still the same. As long as nothing big happens, we should get to move in once they are done fixing things up. I will update as soon as I know. I won’t be able to hold that excitement in!!

The big girls are getting new glasses. The eye doctor had to tweak their prescriptions a little bit, and he said they are almost identical. So odd. Can we petition vision insurance companies to cover kids frames every year?

I just finished reading I’ve Got your Number by Sohphie Kinsella and it was SO good that I read it in two days. It was really entertaining and I was anxious to find out how it was going to end. (There was a lot of foul language, which is such a disappointment to me.) I love reading novels, because stories are so fun. But, I end up not wanting to put them down. So, I can only start one on the weekend. Is anyone else that way, or do you love to savor them?

Yesterday, we had our 100th day of school. Most of my big exciting plans for the day were squashed. But, we did still do some fun projects. The kids had a blast and didn’t know about the plans I had that never happened. I think we are too hard on ourselves as moms. My kids had so much fun with their 100th day, but all I could think about was what I didn’t get done for them. How silly..

We’re all really excited about Valentine’s Day. It’s always fun to make everything into heart shapes and remind people that they are loved. Do you have any big plans for V-day?

Happy Tuesday, friends! I hope you are warm wherever you are.
