• Plans- Farm and Otherwise

I drove by again. Every time I’m behind the wheel, which isn’t often, I drive by. I can’t help but stare at it. This house has a story, and we get to be a part of it. It’s a privilege. Everyone keeps asking if we have an official move in date, but we don’t yet.

Here’s the thing though, even IF something does suddenly come up that prevents us from moving in, we still have plans. We’ll be “farming” here or there.

We are going to do raised garden beds this year for our vegetable garden. Last year, we grew tomatoes, jalapeños, green peppers, green beans, carrots, and blueberries. I tried growing cauliflower, but it didn’t ever get past giant green leaves that were gobbled up by some pest. (I need to do more research.) This year we are hoping to add sweet potatoes, onions, and strawberries to the mix. Possibly more. I may get a couple more blueberry bushes. My mom-in-law bought us one last year, and we got quite a few blueberries off of it. Harper would eat them until she turned blue if we let her. Basically, she ate them all last year and we got none. ha! If we’re in the farm house in time, we’ll be getting some chickens also!!!!!

Scott is most likely going to build the raised beds unless we find a great deal on a kit of some sort. I hope to share that process once it gets started. Something like this, only a little less fancy. It can either be inspiration, or a good lesson in what not to do. That’s the fun and frustrating part of learning, right?

This is our new dining table! My mom saw it at Salvation Army and text a picture to me. I sent Scott to check it out when he got off of work. He left it there that day, but went back again the next day and it was on sale. Of course he bought it and picks it up today. You can see some wear on the front right corner, so it needs some love. Possibly sanding down and re-staining. I think we may do the bench on one side for the kids and use two of our current chairs for Scott and I. But, we’ll see once we get it home.

We are so close to Spring, and I always get super anxious to make all the plans to do all the things. I’m already working on plans for our next year of homeschooling. We LOVE Abeka curriculum, and are sticking with it. Chloe will be in 4th, Addi in 2nd, and Harper will be doing pre-k. She’ll be the age to start Kindergarten, but I can tell she’s just not ready and that is perfectly fine. I started Chloe in K less than a month after she turned 5, and I’ve always regretted pushing her. I won’t make that mistake again.

Now, I need your help. We need a good vacuum. I’ve been eyeing this one because it’s got great reviews and isn’t too terribly priced. But, I wonder if this one will be better. We want to buy a good quality vacuum since we’ve gone through so many cheap ones. Do any of you have a Shark vacuum? What’s your opinion? I know the Dyson is best, but that price tag is TOO much. I want it to be lightweight because I need to carry it up and down the stairs, but it needs to be powerful. We four heads of long hair and a dog that sheds like mad. Help!

  • Friday Faves

Happy Friday, friends! Today is chaos. It’s bill paying day and menu planning day and grocery shopping day and homeschooling and and and.. Chaos. This Saturday is my shift at work, so I don’t get much of a weekend.

I love my job. A lot. But, I’m also very tired. Homeschooling is a full time job. I don’t answer my phone during the school hours; making me feel like even more of a shut in. I’ve got papers and tests to grade. Chloe has reached the age of doing book reports. (WHAT?!) Plus, the usual housework that has to get done. Let’s just say I feel a little bit like I’m drowning. Anyway, that certainly isn’t a favorite or cheery- but it’s real.

    On to the fun..

Check out this B&B in the UK! This is for sure going at the top of my bucket list.

My mom told me about this youtube channel, and I really love it. I don’t have a lot of time to watch things, but when I get a chance I watch a video. This is another favorite.

I love using Pinterest along with my cookbooks to plan the menu. I do two weeks at a time– basically each pay period. I have a private “menu” board where I pin the recipes for each menu plan so that they are easy to find. Do you use Pinterest?

I love following Layla on Instagram. This blog post of hers is so good. I long to create a home made for “front porch fellowshipping”.

I’ve recently read a couple of Sophie Kinsella novels. If you are looking for a lighthearted read, pick one up. (There is some language that I could really do without..)

    Elderberry. We always love elderberry.

Have a wonderful weekend! What is something you are looking forward to?

  • Simple Roots Meal Delivery

Today I want to share a paleo meal delivery service in our area. Simple Roots has brought something so unique to farm country. Go here to read about Mackenzie and Kacy, the founders. They have a new menu each week. Their food is all locally sourced and made with REAL ingredients.

Gyro Bowl + Tzatziki and balsamic vinaigrette

Once you’ve decided on your meals, add your selections to your shopping cart. You have the option to select to have it delivered for a fee, or pick up at their building for free. They deliver to quite a few places, so be sure to check and see if you are included. *Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota can get deliveries!

Each item comes with a label that lists all of the ingredients along with reheating instructions if applicable. It also tells you how soon you need to eat each meal. If you count macros or calories, you can see them right there. It really couldn’t be more simple. I love the added health tips on each meal that tell you all of the goodness you are getting.

    Buffalo Chicken Casserole + Ranch

The thing that often keeps people from eating healthy is time. It takes more time to make your food from real ingredients. Convenience food practically doesn’t exist in a healing diet. Simple Roots takes all of the guess work out of it. I have a stack of ready to go meals in my fridge right now that won’t make me feel miserable.

I know what you are thinking. Is the food actually good? YES! It is so yummy and filling. Too often, people think that eating healthy means sacrificing taste. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. There is magic in farm fresh ingredients. Real food is so delicious!

Go check them out and place an oder.

Here is their FAQs page if you have any questions that I didn’t answer. I cannot recommend them enough!!

  • Settle Down; It’ll All Be Clear

We drove by the farm house over the weekend.

(I feel like this song needs to be playing.)

It was cold, but we got out of the car. The girls ran around on the property. Their delighted squeals just about made my heart burst. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen the video I posted to my stories. I missed the best part, but I still captured some of their joy. You can watch it in the “farm house” highlight if you’re interested. That highlight also includes getting to walk around the exterior of the house with me.

I spoke to the owner’s wife again last week. I told her that I wanted to make sure she knew that we were still interested. She said “Oh, it’s YOURS as soon as we finish the work.” So, there’s your update. Which, really is the same as before. I was told that we could rent it once the work was done and we told our families that. The farmer’s goal was to have the work done by Spring.

I have this fear that something will make it all fall apart. I’m afraid they will find something major wrong that will make the dream come crashing down. I hate that. Our lives look nothing at all like what we ever thought they would be, so when something good is on the horizon I can’t ever fully believe it. What a crummy way to look at life. I’ve got to stop waiting for the other shoe to drop…

This place is like magic. As soon as I step out of the car, all of my fears wash away. My mind becomes clear. All of the chaos dies down.

    Serene.

Life feels loud and overwhelming so often. My kids have been through so much. They’ve had their lives uprooted so many times, and they don’t fully understand it. They’ve lost their Papa that they loved dearly. They also know that my grandparents, whom they have come to know and love, are very sick and won’t make it much longer. So, when we drove up to the farm house the first time and they declared “I WANT TO LIVE HERE” without having a clue that it was a possibility..

To hear their joy.. you guys..

I can’t wait to show them the inside. We thought about calling up the owner to see if we could go in, but decided that we needed to get home to make dinner since it was getting late. I did take some pictures through the doors.

See the wood stove?! That dark wall is an office space.
This is the mudroom and you can see into the kitchen. Tiny fridge included. haha
More of the mudroom. There’s stairs to the far left that go down to the basement.

This isn’t really an update since nothing has changed. The news is still the same. The anticipation keeps building. Sneak peaks here and there.

We’ve been praying for wisdom and clarity, and God grants it. He is faithful.

  • Spinning Plates

I’ve been a little silent over here. The blog may be quiet, but life certainly isn’t. Life is feeling very stressful and overwhelming at the moment.

    Dentists appointments. $$$$
    Emergency Room visit $$$$$$$$
Eye doctor appointment and new glasses $$$
    Plumber visit $$
    Doctor removing stitches $

I feel like I’m spinning one hundred plates, but I’m not spinning them well. I think I’m at the point where they are about to all come crashing down on me.

Last week, I spent several hours in the ER with Chloe. She had to get some x-rays and five stitches. If you are picturing a cut that needed closed, don’t. It was awful, but that kid is a champ. She handled several numbing shots so bravely and read Betty Bunny books to me. We got home at 12:30 AM, and were both exhausted. She wasn’t allowed to write for the first couple of days, so she was giving me the answers and I would write them down for her. No school missed that way. She gets the stitches out on Friday if everything goes well.

On the farmhouse front- the news is still the same. As long as nothing big happens, we should get to move in once they are done fixing things up. I will update as soon as I know. I won’t be able to hold that excitement in!!

The big girls are getting new glasses. The eye doctor had to tweak their prescriptions a little bit, and he said they are almost identical. So odd. Can we petition vision insurance companies to cover kids frames every year?

I just finished reading I’ve Got your Number by Sohphie Kinsella and it was SO good that I read it in two days. It was really entertaining and I was anxious to find out how it was going to end. (There was a lot of foul language, which is such a disappointment to me.) I love reading novels, because stories are so fun. But, I end up not wanting to put them down. So, I can only start one on the weekend. Is anyone else that way, or do you love to savor them?

Yesterday, we had our 100th day of school. Most of my big exciting plans for the day were squashed. But, we did still do some fun projects. The kids had a blast and didn’t know about the plans I had that never happened. I think we are too hard on ourselves as moms. My kids had so much fun with their 100th day, but all I could think about was what I didn’t get done for them. How silly..

We’re all really excited about Valentine’s Day. It’s always fun to make everything into heart shapes and remind people that they are loved. Do you have any big plans for V-day?

Happy Tuesday, friends! I hope you are warm wherever you are.

  • Black and White on a Budget

I am re-posting this because it didn’t transfer from my old blog!

I love the monochromatic look. I love black and white baby and kid rooms, but they  usually are full of completely out-of-my-price-range products. I thought I’d put together a list of really awesome black and white products from Amazon so your nursery can look like this without breaking the bank.

    BWNursery.jpg

swaddles // crib sheets // changing pad covers // cloud crib sheet // boppy cover // pacifier clips  // burp cloths // storage baskets // laundry hamper // humidifier (worth every penny) // sleep sack // crib// swaddle wrap // house tissue box cover // hedgehog night light //

Amazon is my favorite way to shop. I love using Swagbucks to earn Amazon gift cards– which really helps me stay on budget. That is how I was able to buy some new things when I was pregnant with Harper.  We all know that babies are expensive, and I hope this helps you find some great baby items on a budget!

All Amazon links are affiliate links. This does not change the cost of your item, but a small portion of your purchase does go to me. Thank you for supporting me as I support my family.
  • Miss Fong Bag Review

Hey, friends! I wanted to share a really functional new bag that I found.

I have been on the hunt for a cheap bag that I could use for my kids, but also just for myself. I have a really lovely handbag that Scott bought for my birthday last year, and I carry it everywhere. Sometimes, I need something a little bigger. When I’m going grocery shopping and have my notebook with my shopping list and massive coupon folder, for example. Or, when I am running to one of the many doctor, dentist, ophthalmologist, etc. appointments for my kiddos. I need space for books and entertainment to keep the kiddos somewhat calm and quiet in the many waiting rooms.

Enter, the Miss Fong bag. This bag is sold as a diaper bag, but functions really well in so many other ways. Below, you can see the inside. There are several pockets around the outside of the bag, including two insulated pockets if you need them. There is still a ton of room to add children’s books, a change of clothes, snacks, and other things I may carry for my older children.

What I love about this bag is that the inside is completely wipeable. Should I spill something inside or get crumbs everywhere I can clean it easily. This bag is nylon on the outside. It looks really beautiful. It’s awesome because I can dunk the whole bag in soapy water and wash it! I spill my coffee pretty often, so the nylon is brilliant. It is currently out of stock, but the other bags are completely wipeable on the outside so you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

There are plenty of exterior pockets to keep my keys and hand sanitizer easy to access. There is also a large back pocket as you can see in the picture below. You can fit a tablet in there, or remove the backpack straps or messenger strap and store them inside. It also has this genius zipper across the bottom so that you can open it up and slide it on your suitcase handle for travel.

Every feature of this bag is so well thought out. It is very comfortable to wear messenger style and backpack style. I am so impressed with the quality for the price. I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a bag, but I also wanted something that would last. I feel like this fits the bill for both.

If you are on the market for one of these bags, be sure to check on each color. Many of them have coupons that you can clip for additional savings. I got mine for a really great price that way!! I never pay full price for anything!

This post contains affiliate links. Should you make a purchase, a small percentage will go to me, but your price is not affected. Thanks for support!

  • This is Where You Belong

Don’t you just love when a book is really thought provoking? I am reading “This is Where You Belong” by Melody Warnick as part of the Everyday Reading book club.

This book is all about falling in love with your town. I picked this up feeling a little unsure. I love in the town that I grew up in. But, we didn’t really move here by choice. It was move back and live with my parents for a short time, or be homeless. I love living near family. This town is safe and nice and all of that, but I never wanted to move back.

Melody wrote a chapter called “Buy Local” that has really resonated with me. I’ve always loved supporting local business and small shops, but never really put much thought into it. When you shop at a big box store, most of the money you spend doesn’t stay in your area. It climbs up the corporate ladder and doesn’t benefit your area at all. When you buy something at a local shop, most of that many stays in your town. The tax dollars improve your roads and give you better schools. You are supporting someone that you get to know very well.

A day or two after reading this chapter, we needed to get our oil changed. I called the local auto shops. The first one was completely booked. The next one squeezed me in between two appointments. I was so grateful. He even let me know that one of our other fluids was a little low, and that he’d order it and would top it off for me once it came in.

We have a candy shop in town that the girls and I stop in when we are going for walks. One day that we stopped in, I was buying some things for my mom who had just had knee replacement surgery. Addison told the woman behind the counter what we were doing. This lady put colorful ribbons on everything and bright tissue paper to make it look like a present. It may not seem like a big deal, but it meant the world to me.

Small businesses care. They want your business. They will get to know you. They will know your likes and dislikes.

I am really enjoying this book. Where we live may not be a permanent address, but I can learn to love it while we are here. I can invest myself in where I am. So can you.

I’ve always had the attitude in the back of my mind of “well, we’ll probably move soon anyway, so why get attached?” While it is true that in youth ministry, it’s common to move more often than most other jobs, that doesn’t mean I need to keep everyone and everything at arms length.

It’s ok to get attached. It’s ok to love where I am for the time being. I love that this book has challenged me and given me tangible ways to love where I am. I encourage you to pick this book up at your library or purchase it and pass it on when you are done! It’s such a great read!
