Breastfeeding Part 3- Keeping Up

How do I keep my supply up
Almost every breastfeeding mama will face a low milk supply. Whether it be from a cold or a growth spurt, something always happens to cause a struggle to keep up with baby’s needs. This is great for any mama who is going back to work and needing to get a supply built up in the freezer; or just a mama who wants extra liquid gold on hand!
Some of the things that I found to work may not work for everyone. This is what worked for me, and also several other mamas that I know.
1. Oatmeal I know this is weird. I do not know why. But, eating a bowl of oatmeal in the morning ALWAYS helped me up my supply. It worked for my sisters as well. Maybe there is some crazy science behind it; I haven’t looked. It is also pretty filling, so oatmeal gives you a great start to the day.
2. Mother’s Milk Tea I’ll be honest. It took me a while to get used to the taste of this stuff. I had to sweeten mine with honey to be able to tolerate the taste. After a few days, I ended up really enjoying it.
3. Fenugreek This herb has been known to help increase milk supply. Be warned- you and/or your urine may start to smell like maple syrup while to take this! It wasn’t really a problem, just a surprise! There are so many brands to choose from and many price points. I have always found that you get what you pay for in cases like this. *Always be safe and check with your doctor about adding any supplement to your daily routine.
4. Booby Bites I am immature and giggled over the name of these. Booby Bites are amazing though! This recipe is so delicious, and is supposed to help with milk supply. With the brewer’s yeast, you will want to check with your doctor to be sure it is safe to add. You can make this recipe with or without brewer’s yeast, and it will still taste delicious. If you end up having a baby with a dairy allergy, you can make these with dairy free chocolate chips! I gobbled these bad boys up!!
5. Oat Mama Bars I will be honest. I never got the chance to try these, as I discovered them at the end of my breastfeeding years. However, I have seen so many people singing their praises that I feel good recommending them.  You can throw a bar in the diaper bag, etc. and have a good snack on the go.
6. Pump after feeding This one is tough. Breastfeeding takes up so much of your day that it’s hard to want to pump on top of it. If you pump for just 5 minutes after the baby is done eating, it will help your supply increase. Your body is designed to produce what is needed. Supply and demand! If you start demanding more, your body will catch up and supply more.
7. Drink Water If you start getting dehydrated, the rest of your body will suffer. It’s vital to drink a lot of water while breastfeeding. I was terrible about this, but could always tell when I needed more!
I am sure that there are MANY other tricks to increase your milk supply. I would love to hear if you have any to add!
